Ignacio Piñeiro y Su Septeto

This 2017 collection celebrates the foundational contributions of Ignacio Piñeiro, a pivotal figure in the development of the Cuban son style. Piñeiro was instrumental in refining the septeto format during the 1920s and 1930s, famously expanding the traditional sextet by adding the trumpet, which shifted the genre’s rhythmic and harmonic complexity. The compilation serves as a curated archival look back at the output of his legendary Septeto Nacional, which remained one of the most influential ensembles in the history of Afro-Cuban music.

Released by the label Calle Mayor, the collection is designed to preserve the sonic legacy of Havana’s golden age for modern listeners. By gathering these seminal recordings, the release provides a comprehensive overview of how Piñeiro integrated rural guajira influences with urban jazz sensibilities. It remains well-regarded by scholars and enthusiasts of Latin music history for its commitment to maintaining the integrity of the original performances while presenting them in a remastered, accessible format.
