Where it came from
Released in 2019 under the C.A.M. Jazz label, 'Improvisation' serves as a significant collaborative project for Trio IXI, which consists of violinists Régis Huby and Guillaume Roy alongside cellist Atsushi Sakaï. The album captures the trio's deep exploration of contemporary chamber music and free improvisation, continuing the ensemble’s long-standing dedication to pushing the technical and expressive boundaries of the string trio format.
The album reflects the trio's refined aesthetic, which emphasizes textures, microtonal nuances, and the interplay between written structures and spontaneous composition. Drawing from their extensive backgrounds in modern jazz and avant-garde classical music, the musicians aimed to create a soundscape that highlights the individual tonal colors of their instruments. Upon its release, the work was received by critics as a sophisticated extension of the trio's ongoing dialogue with contemporary sonic art, noted for its disciplined approach to improvisational forms.
