Israel Symphony; Schelomo; Three Jewish Poems

This 2023 release from the Alto label serves as a retrospective compilation of Ernest Bloch’s seminal works, focusing on his exploration of Jewish identity through Western classical forms. The collection features performances by the Utah Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Maurice Abravanel, alongside contributions from cellist Zara Nelsova and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra conducted by James Sedares. These recordings bring together disparate sessions that reflect the mid-to-late 20th-century effort to preserve and promote Bloch’s intricate, emotionally charged soundscapes.

The design and curation of this album aim to synthesize Bloch's diverse output, pairing the sweeping ambition of his Israel Symphony with the intimate, rhapsodic intensity of Schelomo. By anchoring the release in the authoritative interpretations of Abravanel, whose work with the Utah Symphony remains a benchmark for American orchestral recordings, the label provides a cohesive listening experience. The compilation is presented as a scholarly endeavor, intended for listeners seeking a definitive overview of Bloch's late Romantic and modernist stylistic evolution.
