Ithemba Lami

Ithemba Lami was released in 2009 under the South African independent label Sheer Sound, which has long been instrumental in distributing contemporary African music and promoting local talent. The album emerged during a period of growth for the label as it sought to bridge the gap between traditional African melodic structures and modern studio production techniques, aiming to reach both domestic and international listeners interested in the rich tapestry of South African sound.

Bongani Nkwanyana’s work on this project reflects a commitment to the vocal traditions of the region, emphasizing themes of hope and perseverance, as indicated by the title which translates to My Hope. The design and sonic direction were intended to showcase Nkwanyana’s soulful delivery within a polished, radio-friendly framework, resulting in a release that found a place within the genre of soulful Afro-pop and contemporary gospel-inflected music of the late 2000s.
