Provenance

Where it came from

I've Always Kept a Unicorn: The Acoustic Sandy Denny was released in 2016 as a curated collection designed to strip away the elaborate studio arrangements of Sandy Denny’s career, focusing instead on the intimate, raw essence of her songwriting. The compilation draws from a vast array of home demos, BBC sessions, and live acoustic performances recorded throughout the 1960s and 1970s. It was conceived as a companion piece to the expansive career-spanning box set 'Sandy Denny', intended to showcase the stark brilliance of her voice and guitar work without the intervention of Fairport Convention or Fotheringay’s full bands.

The album serves as a definitive testament to Denny's stature as one of Britain’s foremost folk-rock singer-songwriters. The design and selection reflect a reverent approach to her legacy, emphasizing the vulnerability that defined her later work. Upon release, it was warmly received by critics and long-time fans alike, who praised the intimate sound quality of the remastered tracks. By presenting her music in this unadorned state, the collection highlights the intricate folk sensibilities and lyrical depth that made Denny an enduring influence on subsequent generations of acoustic musicians.
