Where it came from
Released in 2015 on the Futura Records label, Jade (New Spiritual Music) represents a collaborative endeavor led by saxophonist and flutist Biggi Vinkeloe. The project emerged from a desire to blend avant-garde jazz sensibilities with contemporary spiritual explorations, drawing together a diverse ensemble including François Lemonnier, Karin Nelson, Maria Forsström, and The Volcanic Choir. The composition aims to create a meditative, atmospheric soundscape that reflects Vinkeloe's long-standing interest in the intersection of improvisational music and transcendent, non-secular themes.
The album's design and conceptual framework lean into the aesthetic of 21st-century experimental jazz, favoring a minimalist presentation that directs focus toward the sonic textures of the collective performance. While the release remains a niche entry within the European free-jazz circuit, it is noted for its cohesive arrangement and the unique vocal contributions of Forsström and the choir. Reception among jazz critics has highlighted the project as a sincere, if esoteric, contribution to the tradition of spiritual jazz, recognized primarily by enthusiasts of Vinkeloe’s expansive improvisational catalog.
