Where it came from
Released in 2005 by the German label Ars Musici, this recording is the third volume in a dedicated series exploring the works of the 16th-century Flemish composer Jacobus Vaet. Vaet was a significant figure in the imperial chapel of the Habsburgs during the Renaissance, serving under Ferdinand I and Maximilian II, yet his work remained largely overshadowed by his contemporaries until specialized labels like Ars Musici began systematic efforts to document his complex polyphonic output.
The recording features the Dufay Ensemble, a group specialized in the performance of historical vocal music. Their approach emphasizes the intricate counterpoint and somber, devotional qualities characteristic of Vaet’s motets, such as the Salve Regina and various homage compositions. The project was conceived as an scholarly contribution to the Early Music canon, providing listeners with access to high-fidelity interpretations of music that, while highly influential in the courts of the Holy Roman Empire, was historically under-represented in the modern commercial recording catalog.
