Provenance

Where it came from

This recording was released by Ocora Radio France, a label renowned for its meticulous documentation of global musical traditions since 1957. The album focuses on Gamelan Degung, a classical ensemble style native to the Sundanese people of West Java, Indonesia. Historically, this music was reserved for the royal courts and elite social gatherings of the Sundanese aristocracy, characterized by its contemplative, serene melodic structures and the use of the distinctive degung set of instruments.

The production serves as a continuation of Ocora's long-standing ethnomusicological mission to preserve traditional sounds in high-fidelity formats. The design reflects the label's signature minimalist aesthetic, favoring informative, scholarly liner notes and field-recorded audio that prioritizes cultural authenticity over commercial appeal. Upon its release, it was well-received by world music enthusiasts and academic institutions for its technical clarity and for providing a sophisticated window into Indonesian instrumental history.
