Where it came from
The Jena Big Band, a staple of the jazz scene in Jena, Germany, self-released this eponymous CD in 2013 to document their expansive repertoire. As a community-integrated ensemble, the group represents the intersection of local music education and professional-grade performance, utilizing this recording to showcase their agility across jazz standards, fusion, and contemporary big band arrangements.
The album serves as a snapshot of the ensemble's collective output during a period of sustained activity within the Thuringian jazz landscape. Without the backing of a major label, the production reflects a grassroots effort to archive their orchestral sound, focusing on the balanced interplay between the brass, woodwind, and rhythm sections that defines the band’s identity under their dedicated local leadership.
