Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 1999 by Rocking Horse Records, this compilation serves as a curated anthology of the musical output of J. Allen Williams, who performed under the aliases Jeff Williams and Carmen Wilder. The collection was designed to capture the experimental landscape of the artist's independent recording career during the late 1990s, offering a retrospective view of his stylistic evolution within the alternative folk and lo-fi genres.

The project reflects the aesthetic common to late-nineties independent labels, prioritizing artistic autonomy over commercial polish. J. Allen Williams, who is also known for his contributions to independent animation and media production, utilized these recordings to explore a range of narrative song structures. While it remains a niche release within the broader catalog of Rocking Horse Records, the collection is recognized by enthusiasts of obscure independent music as a definitive document of his specific creative era.
