Where it came from
Released in 2008 on the Koch Records label, this self-titled album marked a significant transition for Jenny Scheinman, a violinist already well-regarded in the New York jazz and experimental scenes. Following her work as a sideman for artists like Bill Frisell and Norah Jones, this project served as a showcase for her evolution as a composer and bandleader, blending American folk, jazz improvisation, and chamber music sensibilities.
The album was produced with a focus on intimate, lyrical storytelling, featuring Scheinman’s quartet alongside guest appearances that highlight the fluid boundaries of her sound. The design and aesthetic of the release lean into the organic, roots-oriented atmosphere of the music, reflecting a period in the late 2000s where instrumentalists were increasingly bridging the gap between sophisticated jazz craft and accessible, song-oriented melodies.
