Where it came from
Gang War was a short-lived project formed in 1979 by former New York Dolls guitarist Johnny Thunders and MC5 co-founder Wayne Kramer. Emerging from the embers of the punk and protopunk movements, the duo performed together in clubs across New York City for about a year, capturing the raw, improvisational energy of two legendary figures at a transitional point in their careers. The music is characterized by a gritty blend of rhythm and blues, rock and roll, and the loose, chaotic aesthetic that defined Thunders' post-Dolls work.
This 2020 release from Jungle Records serves as a compilation of archival live recordings and studio demos that chronicle the brief but influential collaboration between the two guitarists. Produced to preserve the legacy of these notoriously elusive sessions, the collection was curated for fans of the late seventies underground rock scene who value the unfiltered interplay between Kramer's high-energy technicality and Thunders' soulful, volatile playing style. It has been received by music historians as a essential document of a volatile period in rock history that was previously only available through low-fidelity bootlegs.
