Jonatha Brooke / Jamie Cullum

This recording features Jonatha Brooke performing a cover of Jamie Cullum's 'These Are the Days,' released in 2004 under her independent label, Bad Dog Records. Emerging from a period where Brooke transitioned from her folk-pop roots with The Story to a successful solo career, the track highlights her ability to bridge the gap between singer-songwriter sensibilities and jazz-inflected pop. The release served as a showcase for her interpretive skills, capturing the mid-2000s trend of established artists exploring contemporary jazz and soul-pop crossover material.

The arrangement reflects the period's production aesthetic, emphasizing Brooke’s distinctively nuanced vocals and intricate guitar work. By issuing the track through Bad Dog Records, Brooke maintained artistic control, a hallmark of her career strategy following her departure from major label contracts. While the release was primarily intended for fans of her adult contemporary style, it was well-received by critics who noted her technical growth and the stylistic maturity she brought to Cullum’s chart-topping composition.
