Where it came from
Released in 2011 on the Alert Records label, this self-titled album marked a significant transition in Michael Kaeshammer's career as a pianist, singer, and songwriter. Known primarily for his virtuosic command of boogie-woogie and stride piano, Kaeshammer sought with this project to integrate his instrumental prowess more seamlessly into a pop-oriented song structure, blending his jazz roots with accessible, lyrical compositions that leaned into his growth as a vocalist.
The album reflects a stylistic pivot toward a more polished, contemporary sound, characterized by tight arrangements and an emphasis on melody. Production was handled to showcase his evolving versatility, moving away from pure instrumental displays to feature a warmer, radio-friendly production aesthetic. It was received by critics as a successful maturation of his craft, demonstrating how the artist could maintain the technical integrity of his piano playing while expanding his appeal within the singer-songwriter genre.
