Where it came from
Released in 2009 by the German label PrimTON, this recording captures a live performance held at the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtnis-Kirche in Berlin. The album features quintessential repertoire for the organ and orchestra, specifically Francis Poulenc’s Concerto in G minor and Camille Saint-Saëns’ Symphony No. 3, known as the Organ Symphony. These works are cornerstones of the 20th-century and Romantic-era organ repertoire, chosen here to showcase the acoustic capabilities of the church's unique instrument.
The performance features Wolfgang Seifen, a renowned improviser and organist, alongside conductor Lutz Köhler. The recording is notable for its setting within the Gedächtniskirche, a landmark that symbolizes both the history of Berlin and the resilience of its musical culture. The production emphasizes the interplay between the orchestral textures and the specific reverberant qualities of the church, offering listeners a faithful representation of the organ's integration with the ensemble within this architectural space.
