Where it came from
Released in 1995 on the state-run Egrem label, this compilation serves as a quintessential retrospective for Los Van Van, the legendary Cuban band founded by bassist Juan Formell in 1969. The collection was curated to distill decades of the group's evolution from their pioneering 'songo' rhythm, which fused traditional Cuban son with rock, funk, and jazz elements, into a definitive sonic document for both domestic and international listeners.
The album's design and tracklist reflect the band's status as the architects of modern Cuban dance music. By selecting these specific highlights from the Egrem archives, the production aimed to showcase the songwriting prowess of Formell and the virtuosic arrangements that defined the Havana sound. Upon its release, the record was well-received as an essential entry point into the band's extensive catalog, capturing the infectious energy that made them a cultural institution.
