Where it came from
Released in 1995 on the state-run Egrem label, this volume serves as a significant retrospective and re-issue effort for Juan Formell y Los Van Van. The collection draws from the foundational period of the band, which Formell formed in 1969 after departing Orquesta Revé. The recording captures the pioneering 'songo' rhythm, a genre Formell engineered by blending traditional Cuban son with elements of North American funk, rock, and jazz, fundamentally altering the trajectory of Cuban popular music.
The album reflects the group's evolution from a creative experiment into the preeminent force of Cuban dance music. Designed to preserve the group's early legacy for a new generation of listeners, the tracks represent the ensemble's departure from traditional charanga instrumentation toward a harder, more bass-driven sound. Upon its release, the collection was received as an essential archival document, grounding the band's later global success in the innovative, genre-defying arrangements that first defined their presence in Havana's nightlife.
