Where it came from
La Magie des Chants Grégoriens, released in 2006 under the FGL Productions label, features the ensemble Hortus Musicus. The collection serves as an anthology of liturgical chant, a genre that saw a significant surge in commercial interest during the late 20th and early 21st centuries. By presenting these monophonic, unaccompanied melodies, the record aims to evoke the contemplative atmosphere of medieval monastic life within a modern recording framework.
Hortus Musicus, an Estonian ensemble founded in 1972 by Andres Mustonen, is renowned for its historically informed approach to early music. Their interpretation on this disc prioritizes stylistic authenticity while catering to the global audience that found aesthetic solace in the ethereal, repetitive nature of Gregorian chant. The album is part of a broader trend of European labels documenting sacred vocal traditions, often packaged to appeal to listeners seeking a meditative or tranquil sonic environment.
