Where it came from
Commissioned to mark the 250th anniversary of J.S. Bach’s death, Osvaldo Golijov’s La Pasión Según San Marcos was composed in 2000 as part of the Passion 2000 project. The work reflects Golijov's Argentine upbringing and his desire to recontextualize the Passion narrative through a diverse Latin American lens, blending elements of Afro-Cuban percussion, tango, and liturgical tradition to create a deeply visceral experience.
The 2001 Hänssler Classic recording captures the premiere performance under the direction of Maria Guinand, who played a central role in realizing the score's complex rhythmic and choral requirements. The work was widely lauded upon release for its innovative fusion of sacred music and vernacular soundscapes, earning a Grammy nomination and solidifying Golijov’s reputation as a vital voice in contemporary classical music.
