Provenance

Where it came from

Lamina was released in 2023 through Dais Records as a continuation of Drew McDowall’s exploration into dense, atmospheric soundscapes. McDowall, a veteran of experimental electronic music best known for his influential work with Coil and Psychic TV, crafted this project to push the boundaries of modular synthesis. The compositions are deeply rooted in the post-industrial tradition, emphasizing intricate textures and immersive, hypnotic rhythms that challenge the listener’s perception of space and time.

The album serves as a meditation on the concept of layers, both auditory and structural, which is reflected in its minimalist visual presentation. McDowall sought to create a sonic environment that feels organic yet manufactured, utilizing complex signal chains to generate shifting drones. Upon its arrival, the work was received by the experimental community as a masterclass in modern sound design, solidifying McDowall's status as a pivotal figure in the evolution of ambient and avant-garde electronic music.
