Where it came from
Released by the French label Milan in 2015, this compilation honors the enduring collaboration between British filmmaker David Lean and the composers who defined his epic cinematic vision. The collection focuses primarily on the iconic work of Malcolm Arnold, whose score for the 1957 film The Bridge on the River Kwai earned an Academy Award, and Maurice Jarre, who crafted the sweeping, atmospheric soundscapes for subsequent Lean masterpieces like Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago.
The album serves as a curated retrospective of mid-century film scoring, highlighting the shift from Arnold's rhythmic, melodic integration of existing military marches to Jarre's innovative, multi-textured orchestral arrangements. By grouping these works under one banner, the release highlights the structural importance of music in Lean’s storytelling, which often relied on leitmotifs and grand orchestration to mirror the vast geographical and psychological landscapes depicted in his large-scale productions.
