Provenance

Where it came from

Released by the French label Skarbo in 1993, this recording features the liturgical compositions of Jean Langlais, a prominent 20th-century French organist and composer. The album serves as a meditative exploration of the relationship between contemporary organ works and traditional Gregorian chant, showcasing the acoustic nuances of the organ and the vocal clarity of the Choeur Grégorien du Mans.

The production sought to highlight Langlais's ability to bridge the gap between ancient sacred traditions and modern harmonic language. By pairing Missa in Simplicitate with his organ works, the performers provided a focused study on liturgical music. The recording is well-regarded by scholars and enthusiasts of French organ music for its adherence to the spiritual gravity of Langlais's intent and the technical precision of the performances by Danielle Michel and Jacques Kauffmann.
