The Markuspassion BWV 247 remains one of the most intriguing enigmas in the catalog of Johann Sebastian Bach. While the libretto by Christian Friedrich Henrici, known as Picander, was set to music by Bach for Good Friday in 1731, the original score is presumed lost. This 2004 release by the label Raumklang offers a reconstructed version of the work, attempting to restore the presumed musical framework using Bach's existing parodies and movements from other cantatas.

The production features the Leipziger Vocalensemble and the Leipziger Barockorchester under the direction of David Timm, incorporating new Evangelienmusik composed by Volker Bräutigam to replace the missing recitatives. Bräutigam, a contemporary German composer, utilized modern tonal language to bridge the gaps in the traditional narrative, creating a controversial yet scholarly dialogue between the Baroque style of Bach and twentieth-century compositional techniques.
