Where it came from
The Minimal Piano Collection, released by Brilliant Classics in 2017, serves as an extensive survey of the minimalist movement in piano music. This specific set, spanning volumes XXI through XXVIII, focuses on compositions that emphasize repetitive patterns, subtle harmonic shifts, and the exploration of resonance. The collection was curated to provide a comprehensive archive of influential works, bringing together pioneers like La Monte Young and Terry Riley alongside essential modern minimalists such as Harold Budd and Philip Glass.
The recordings are primarily performed by Dutch pianist Jeroen van Veen, a central figure in the interpretation of minimalist repertoire for the Brilliant Classics label. Van Veen’s approach is characterized by a precise, meditative aesthetic that aligns with the minimalist ethos of stripping away ornamentation to reveal the structural core of the music. The set has been well-regarded by critics for its academic rigor and its commitment to making often-elusive, avant-garde piano works accessible to a broader audience of contemporary music listeners.
