Romantic Clarinet Concertos

The Romantic Clarinet Concertos collection, released by the Dutch budget label Brilliant Classics, serves as a curated survey of early 19th-century wind repertoire. It brings together the major concertante works for clarinet by Carl Maria von Weber, Louis Spohr, and Bernhard Henrik Crusell, composers who were instrumental in elevating the instrument from an orchestral supporting role to a primary voice for virtuosic expression during the Romantic era.

The recording project was conceived to provide accessible, high-quality performances of these technically demanding pieces to a broader audience. Featuring interpretations that emphasize the lyrical, singing quality of the clarinet—often referred to as 'il canto spianato'—the set was designed to showcase the shifting aesthetic from the Classical influence of Crusell toward the more dramatic and theatrical flair of Weber and Spohr. It has been well-regarded by critics as a reliable entry point for listeners exploring woodwind literature.
