Where it came from
Released in 1994, this recording serves as a poignant preservation of the Yiddish songs composed by Mordecai Gebirtig, a prolific poet and songwriter who lived in the Krakow district of Kazimierz. The project sought to recover the cultural voice of a community decimated by the Holocaust, focusing on Gebirtig's deeply humanistic and often melancholic compositions that chronicled life, struggle, and eventual tragedy in pre-war and wartime Poland.
The performer, Daniel Kempin, approached these works with a focus on historical authenticity and emotional resonance. By interpreting the material for Koch International Classics, Kempin aimed to bridge the gap between traditional folk performance and contemporary classical listening habits. The collection was received as a significant archival contribution, praised for its restraint and the clarity with which it presented the lyrics, which remain vital documentation of a lost era of Yiddish folk culture.
