Where it came from
Motel Vanilla was self-released by the French indie-pop duo Thé Vanille in 2018. The project emerged from the DIY music scene, reflecting a lo-fi, bedroom-pop aesthetic that prioritizes intimate songwriting and a minimalist production approach. By choosing to release the album independently, the duo maintained complete creative control over their sound, which characteristically blends melancholic melodies with a distinctively nostalgic, retro-synth undertone.
The album serves as a snapshot of the duo's early stylistic development, characterized by airy vocal performances and dreamlike soundscapes. Design-wise, the release embodies the typical visual language of independent music from that era, favoring evocative, minimalist imagery to mirror the dreamy, introspective nature of the tracks. It was received as a charming entry into the French independent circuit, praised by listeners for its sincerity and cohesive, late-night atmospheric feel.
