Where it came from
Released as part of a 2014 reissue series, this album serves as the soundtrack to the 1987 film Siesta. The project emerged from a unique collaboration between jazz legend Miles Davis and multi-instrumentalist Marcus Miller, who composed and produced the score. The music is characterized by a moody, atmospheric soundscape that reflects the film's surrealist narrative, utilizing a blend of synthesized textures and Davis’s iconic, emotive trumpet playing.
The collaboration was born out of a fruitful period of artistic partnership between Davis and Miller during the 1980s. Miller, acting as both composer and primary accompanist, aimed to create a modern, minimalist backdrop that allowed Davis's improvisations to sit at the forefront. Upon its original release, the soundtrack was noted for its departure from traditional jazz scoring, with critics often citing it as a successful experiment in mood-driven contemporary music.
