Provenance

Where it came from

Muziek in West-Vlaanderen II - Benoit? Ho...! Benoit! was released in 2001 as part of an archival project dedicated to preserving the musical heritage of the West Flanders region of Belgium. Produced by the Mupro label, the compilation serves as a cultural survey, documenting local artists and compositions that might otherwise have been lost to obscurity. This specific volume focuses on the thematic legacy surrounding Peter Benoit, a prominent 19th-century Flemish composer, using his influence as a bridge to explore regional contemporary and historical sounds.

The album's design and curation reflect a scholarly yet accessible approach to regional musicology. By juxtaposing classical inspirations with various interpretations of West Flemish musical identity, the producers aimed to provide a comprehensive auditory portrait of the province. The collection was received as a niche but significant contribution to Flemish cultural history, appealing primarily to regional historians, folk enthusiasts, and collectors of Belgian avant-garde or traditional recordings.
