O-Issa

Released in 1999 on the Compagnia Nuove Indye label, O-Issa represents a significant cross-cultural collaboration between the Italian saxophonist Enzo Avitabile and the Guinean griot and musician Mory Kanté. The album emerged from a period of intense experimentation in world music, aimed at blending Neapolitan soul and Mediterranean rhythms with the traditional Mandinka musical heritage brought by Kanté. This project was conceived as a bridge between two distinct sonic worlds, utilizing Avitabile’s signature horn arrangements to frame the percussive and vocal versatility of Kanté.

The collaboration was highly regarded within the world music circuit for its technical execution and the seamless integration of disparate traditions. Critics noted the production’s focus on atmospheric depth and organic instrumentation, which sought to avoid the typical pitfalls of commercial fusion by prioritizing the authenticity of the artists' respective backgrounds.
