Old School: Karlheinz Stockhausen

Released in 2011 on the Zeitkratzer Records label, this album captures the experimental ensemble Zeitkratzer performing the music of Karlheinz Stockhausen. The project emerged from the group's long-standing dedication to interpreting complex contemporary compositions through their unique lens, which blends acoustic instrumentation with avant-garde sensibilities. By reinterpreting works from the 1960s, the ensemble aimed to strip away the clinical sterility often associated with electronic music of that era, injecting a raw, physical energy into Stockhausen's avant-garde framework.

The album reflects a collaborative dialogue between the ensemble’s leader, Reinhold Friedl, and the composer himself, whose late-career openness to creative reinterpretations allowed for this bold exploration. Critics and musicologists received the release as a pivotal bridge between the rigid intellectualism of mid-century serialism and the improvisational spontaneity of modern experimental performance. Its design and execution underscore the ensemble's intent to treat Stockhausen’s scores not as museum pieces, but as living, breathing texts capable of evolving alongside contemporary performance practices.
