Where it came from
Originally recorded in 1964 and released as a definitive statement of the bossa jazz era, O Som captures the innovative work of saxophonist J.T. Meirelles and his quintet, Os Copa 5. The album serves as a bridge between the sophisticated harmonies of bossa nova and the improvisational freedom of hard bop, reflecting the vibrant and experimental musical landscape of 1960s Rio de Janeiro.
This 2001 release by Dubas Música brought the long-out-of-print classic back to audiences during a period of renewed international interest in Brazilian jazz. The production maintains the original aesthetic vision of the group, who sought to modernize the Brazilian sound by integrating the quintet structure with rhythmic complexity, a goal that cemented the record's status as a foundational text for students of the genre.
