Where it came from
Released in 2002 on the Signature label, Oui Mais represents a collaborative exploration between percussionist Régis Boulard and violinist Régis Huby. The album emerged from the creative milieu of the French jazz and contemporary experimental scene, where the Signature label, directed by André Francis, served as a platform for artists looking to bridge the gap between structured jazz composition and free improvisation.
The project focuses on a sparse, intricate interplay between acoustic violin and various percussive elements, reflecting a desire to capture the intimacy of live improvisation within a recorded medium. The design and production aimed for a minimalist aesthetic that emphasizes the textural quality of the instruments, and it was received by critics as a subtle, technically rigorous work that challenged traditional genre classifications within the European avant-garde landscape.
