Where it came from
Released in 1993 on the independent SACI label, O Trio brought together three distinguished virtuosos of Brazilian instrumental music: guitarist Maurício Carrilho, mandolinist Pedro Amorim, and clarinetist Paulo Sérgio Santos. This collaboration emerged from the vibrant scene of Rio de Janeiro’s choro music, where musicians sought to preserve and innovate upon traditional Brazilian forms. By pairing these specific instruments, the artists created a chamber-music-like approach to choro, highlighting the technical precision and melodic interplay characteristic of the genre.
The album reflects a period when acoustic instrumental music in Brazil was experiencing a renewed focus on historical repertoire and sophisticated arrangements. The trio opted for a clean, intimate production style that prioritized the nuances of their instrumental technique over studio artifice. Upon its release, the recording was well-regarded by aficionados of Brazilian popular music for its fidelity to the roots of choro while showcasing the distinct, modern interpretive styles of three of the country's most respected contemporary practitioners.
