Where it came from
Released in 2011 on the Badly Organized imprint of the influential electronic label Mille Plateaux, OBEN - Matthias Beltz Remixed serves as a sonic tribute to the late German cabaret artist and political satirist Matthias Beltz. The project was helmed by experimental musicians Oliver Augst and Rüdiger Carl, who sought to deconstruct and recontextualize Beltz’s biting, rhythmic spoken-word performances through the lens of modern sound art and electronic composition.
The album operates at the intersection of political theater and experimental sound design, utilizing fragments of Beltz’s original recordings as raw material for sonic manipulation. Augst and Carl approached the work as an act of archival preservation and radical evolution, aiming to maintain the intensity of Beltz's original critique while placing it within an abrasive, contemporary avant-garde framework. It received moderate attention within niche circles of German experimental music, recognized primarily as a challenging bridge between legacy political cabaret and the abstract aesthetics of the Mille Plateaux label family.
