Oboe Concertos

Released in 2006 by the label Col Legno, this collection showcases the virtuosic oboe concertos composed by the influential 20th-century Italian conductor and composer Bruno Maderna. Maderna was a central figure in the European avant-garde and a pioneer of electronic music, yet his concertante works remain deeply rooted in a lyrical, highly personal exploration of instrumental color and formal experimentation. These recordings serve as a definitive look at his mid-century contributions to the woodwind repertoire, highlighting the technical and emotional range of the oboe.

The recording features soloist Fabian Menzel performing alongside the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Saarbrücken under the baton of Michael Stern. Col Legno, known for its commitment to documenting contemporary classical music, chose to highlight these specific works to offer listeners a nuanced perspective on Maderna’s musical philosophy. The production was received by critics as a precise and evocative interpretation, praised for capturing the delicate balance between the oboe's singular voice and the complex, atmospheric orchestration that defines Maderna’s mature compositional style.
