Officium S. Thorlaci

Released in 2006, Officium S. Thorlaci is a liturgical reconstruction dedicated to Saint Thorlak, the patron saint of Iceland. The project was conceived by the Icelandic vocal ensemble Voces Thules to restore the medieval plainchant traditions of the Skálholt Cathedral, which served as a major cultural and spiritual hub in Iceland during the Middle Ages. The recording represents a rigorous effort to revive the musical heritage associated with Thorlak Thorhallsson, who served as bishop in the late 12th century and remains a central figure in Icelandic hagiography.

The ensemble, consisting of experienced singers specializing in early music, sought to capture the austerity and resonance of the medieval Icelandic church. By utilizing original manuscripts preserved in the National Library of Iceland, the group meticulously transcribed chants that had largely vanished from contemporary practice. The production is widely regarded by musicologists and historians as an essential contribution to Nordic liturgical studies, praised for its scholarly integrity and the ethereal, resonant quality of the ensemble's performance within the acoustics of historical spaces.
