Paul Hindemith , Dmitrij Schostakowitsch

This 1998 release was produced under the Radio 3 KlassikClub label, a venture associated with the German public broadcaster Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR). It highlights a collaborative effort between the NDR Symphony Orchestra and conductors Claus Peter Flor and Leopold Hager, focusing on the chamber music and orchestral compositions of Paul Hindemith and Dmitri Shostakovich. The selection represents the station's commitment to archiving and disseminating high-quality live broadcast recordings of twentieth-century repertoire to a broader classical audience.

The disc serves as a focused study in the mid-century European avant-garde, juxtaposing the rigorous, contrapuntal architecture of Hindemith with the emotive, often subversive intensity characteristic of Shostakovich. The design and curation reflect a scholarly approach to the interpretation of these composers, prioritizing the technical precision of the NDR ensemble members. As a broadcast-derived production, the release is valued for its specific performance traditions rather than as a commercial studio concept album, finding its place in collections dedicated to the history of German radio-led musical patronage.
