Peter-Lukas Graf Spielt Opern- Und Andere Phrasen

Released in 1987 on the Swiss label Jecklin-Disco, this recording showcases the virtuosic flute playing of Peter-Lukas Graf, accompanied by pianist Zsuzsanna Sirokay. The album serves as a curated exploration of 19th-century salon and operatic repertoire, focusing on variations and fantasies composed by figures such as Ferdinand Ries, Carl Czerny, and Daniel Friedrich Rudolph Kuhlau. By selecting these specific works, Graf aimed to highlight the technical brilliance and expressive potential of the flute within the Romantic tradition, moving beyond standard concertos to embrace the charming, often flamboyant arrangements popular in European musical circles of the era.

The production captures a period in the late 1980s when boutique labels like Jecklin-Disco were instrumental in preserving specialized classical repertoire that larger commercial houses often overlooked. Peter-Lukas Graf, a renowned Swiss flutist and pedagogue, was highly regarded for his articulate technique and scholarly approach to interpretation. This collection was well-received by flute enthusiasts and chamber music collectors for its rarity and for Graf’s ability to imbue these often-technical showpieces with significant musical depth and tonal refinement.
