Provenance

Where it came from

Released by the Dutch label De Bazuin in 1996, this recording serves as a definitive tribute to the life and musical contributions of Gradus Wendt, a prominent Dutch composer and organist. The collection features a series of chorale arrangements intended to celebrate liturgical tradition and the instrument's role in spiritual life, reflecting Wendt’s long-standing dedication to organ performance and composition within the Dutch Reformed tradition.

The album features performances by Albert van der Hoeven, a skilled organist chosen to interpret Wendt’s intricate arrangements. The project was conceived as a testament to Wendt’s technical mastery and his specific stylistic approach to the pipe organ, which favors traditional harmonic structures and emotive phrasing. Upon its release, the recording was primarily received by a niche audience of classical organ enthusiasts and church music historians, valued for its preservation of a distinct regional school of organ composition.
