Where it came from
Released in 2006 by the label Envidia, Recoge y vete marked a significant turning point for Maikel Blanco y su Salsamayor. As one of the early major projects for the band, the album was crafted during a period when the group was rapidly defining its signature sound within the Cuban timba scene. Blanco sought to synthesize traditional salsa arrangements with the aggressive, high-energy percussion and modern brass flourishes that were becoming hallmarks of the Havana music circuit at the time.
The album was designed to serve as a showcase for both Blanco’s compositional maturity and the ensemble's tight, rhythmically complex interplay. Its reception was notable for cementing the group’s reputation as a leader in the next generation of Cuban dance orchestras. By balancing classic melodic sensibilities with innovative, driving arrangements, the recording successfully translated the visceral intensity of their live performances into a studio format, establishing a template for their subsequent international success.
