Where it came from
Released in 1995 on the CDS label, Requiem Grégorien features the Chœur Grégorien De Méditerranée under the direction of Damien Poisblaud. This recording emerged during a period of sustained public interest in liturgical music, focusing on the traditional interpretation of the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass. The production sought to capture the austerity and meditative quality of plainchant, emphasizing vocal purity and the acoustics of the recording environment.
Damien Poisblaud is known for his dedication to the nuances of Gregorian chant, prioritizing stylistic accuracy and historical liturgical practices. His approach often leans away from the more commercialized or orchestral arrangements of the era, favoring a stripped-back, authentic performance. Upon its release, the recording was recognized by enthusiasts of early music as a focused, sincere contribution to the sacred music repertoire, valued for its rhythmic clarity and adherence to traditional chant modality.
