Requiem Grégorien

Released in 1996 on the Alphée label, this recording of the Requiem Mass represents a dedicated effort by Damien Poisblaud and the Chœur Grégorien de Méditerranée to capture the meditative essence of Gregorian chant. The project emerged from a movement in the 1990s seeking to revive interest in historical liturgical music, emphasizing authenticity in vocal technique and the atmospheric acoustics characteristic of traditional chant settings.

The recording is noted for its stark, minimalist approach, stripping away modern artifice to focus on the modal purity of the original manuscripts. Poisblaud, who directed the ensemble, focused on a vocal style that favored clarity and fluidity over dramatic flourish, aiming to transport the listener into the contemplative space for which the Requiem was originally intended. It was received as a respectful and disciplined contribution to the extensive body of Gregorian discography available at the time.
