Where it came from
Released in 2018 on the Freshmeat Label, Requiem serves as a foundational project for the artist Dornkappel. This album emerged during a period of transition within the underground electronic scene, drawing from industrial and ambient textures to establish a distinct sonic identity. The production focuses on atmosphere and structural minimalism, aiming to create a cohesive, immersive experience for the listener that departs from conventional club-oriented compositions.
The design of the physical CD edition emphasizes a stark, utilitarian aesthetic that complements the record's heavy, melancholic undertones. By opting for a stripped-back visual approach, the artist sought to minimize distraction, allowing the auditory content to dictate the reception of the work. Upon its debut, the album was noted by niche electronic music critics for its technical precision and its unflinching adherence to a singular, somber mood.
