Where it came from
Released in 1981 as Roger Taylor's debut solo album while he was still the drummer for Queen, Fun in Space was crafted during a period of creative expansion for the band's individual members. Taylor wrote, produced, and performed almost every instrument on the record, moving away from Queen's signature operatic rock toward a more synth-heavy, science-fiction-inspired sound that reflected his fascination with futuristic themes and space travel.
The 1996 release referenced here is a standard reissue from the EMI catalog, which helped keep the album accessible to new fans during the mid-nineties. The cover art, depicting a surreal, celestial scene, was designed to mirror the space-age atmosphere of the tracks. While it received mixed reviews upon its initial release for its departure from the established Queen aesthetic, it has since been recognized by fans as a cult classic that highlights Taylor's distinct voice and experimental approach to songwriting.
