Where it came from
This 1989 EMI release preserves Sir John Barbirolli’s definitive 1964 and 1965 recordings of Elgar’s monumental oratorio The Dream of Gerontius and the song cycle Sea Pictures. Barbirolli, a lifelong champion of Elgar's music, sought to capture the profound spirituality and late-Romantic intensity of Cardinal Newman’s text, which depicts a soul’s journey through death. His interpretation remains highly regarded for its blend of emotional gravity and lyrical sensitivity, particularly in the collaboration with mezzo-soprano Dame Janet Baker.
The production brought together elite British musical institutions of the era, including the Hallé and London Symphony Orchestras. The EMI reissue served to introduce these masterworks to a new generation of listeners on the digital format. The design reflects the classic EMI studio aesthetic of the time, focusing on the historical significance of the performances, which were originally engineered to highlight the lush, expansive orchestration that defines Elgar’s unique sound world.
