Schwanensee = Swan Lake / Dornröschen = Sleeping Beauty

Released in 1990 under the budget-friendly Classical Masterworks label, this compilation brings together suites from two of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s most enduring ballets. The recording emerged during a period when labels were aggressively digitizing and repackaging archival classical performances to capitalize on the booming compact disc market of the early nineties. It serves as an accessible introduction to the Romantic era's orchestral color and melodic invention, characteristic of Tchaikovsky’s narrative scores.

The production features the London Festival Orchestra and the New Philharmonia Orchestra, conducted by figures such as Alberto Lizzio and Alfred Scholz. These labels often utilized pseudonymized or rotating ensembles to issue classical recordings for mass-market retail outlets. While the performance lacks the critical prestige of major label definitive recordings, the release reflects the democratization of classical music distribution in the late 20th century, providing listeners with a convenient, consolidated collection of Tchaikovsky's most recognizable themes.
