Provenance

Where it came from

See What I Wanna See is a song cycle based on the short stories of Ryunosuke Akutagawa, adapted by Michael John LaChiusa. It premiered Off-Broadway at The Public Theater in 2005. The work explores themes of truth, perspective, and human nature through three distinct narratives, blending elements of Japanese minimalism with LaChiusa's signature complex, contemporary musical theater style.

This 2006 recording by Ghostlight Records captured the original cast featuring Idina Menzel, Marc Kudisch, and Mary Testa. The production was critically noted for its ambitious structure and the powerful vocal performances of its ensemble. LaChiusa aimed to challenge the boundaries of the traditional musical by prioritizing abstract, character-driven storytelling over linear narrative, a choice that solidified his reputation as a vital voice in modern American musical theater.
