Serenade Für Streichorchester C-Dur, Op. 48 = Serenade For Strings In C Major, Op. 48 , Dornröschen, Op. 66 (Auszüge) = The Sleeping Beauty, Op. 66 (Excerpts)

This 2003 release by the Documents label serves as a historical compilation, drawing together performances of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings and excerpts from The Sleeping Beauty. The collection features legendary conductors Willem Mengelberg and Leopold Stokowski, reflecting the mid-20th-century interpretive traditions of the Concertgebouworkest and Stokowski's own hand-picked symphony orchestra. These recordings were curated to preserve the rich, emotive romanticism that defined the mid-century approach to Russian orchestral repertoire.

The compositions themselves represent pinnacles of Tchaikovsky's output, with the Serenade for Strings composed in 1880 as a tribute to Mozart's classical style and The Sleeping Beauty excerpts drawn from his monumental 1890 ballet. The label Documents is known for issuing archival recordings that have entered the public domain, making these significant historical performances accessible to modern listeners. The design of the release adheres to the label's standard scholarly presentation, focusing on historical documentation rather than contemporary remastering trends.
