Six Suittes En Trio

Louis-Antoine Dornel was a prominent French composer and organist active during the early 18th century, a period when the trio sonata was a cornerstone of European chamber music. The Six Suittes en Trio, originally published as his Opus 1, reflect the elegant and intricate style of the French Baroque, characterized by a delicate balance between contrapuntal rigor and melodic ornamentation. These works were intended for professional musicians and high-society amateurs, serving as essential repertoire for private musical gatherings in Parisian salons.

This 2008 recording by Musica Barocca, released under the Naxos label, captures these suites with a focus on historical performance practice. Naxos has long been recognized for its mission to provide accessible, high-quality interpretations of lesser-known classical works, often utilizing period instruments to achieve an authentic timbre. This release was received as a valuable contribution to the discography of French Baroque chamber music, offering listeners a clear and nuanced exploration of Dornel’s specific harmonic language and rhythmic vitality.
